This cross is called “Irene-Irene of Athens”. Empress Irene of Athens was the first female ruler of the Byzantine Empire. Born in Athens around 752 and she was the wife of the Byzantine Emperor Leo IV. She helped bring an end to the iconoclastic controversy. In 787 she called the Second Council of Nicaea which condemned the practice of iconoclasm and restored the veneration of icons to Christian practice.
